Shirakumo Shrine

Shirakumo Shrine locates in the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and enshrines Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto, the goddess of music. Once every 12 days on the day of snake, the shrine holds the festival of snakes from 7:00 am because snakes are considered to be the divine servant of the goddess. On the days of the festival, visitors can participate in the purification ceremony for free. Shriakumo Shrine is also famous for standing on the former site of Saionji Kinmochi, the founder of Ritsumeikan University.

Main Sanctuary: Benzaiten Mokuzou Zazou (“The wooden seated statue of Benzaiten”), which is enshrined in the main sanctuary, is designated as the Tangible Cultural Property by the Japanese government.
Yakushi Ishi (The Healing Stone): It is believed that people can receive a magical healing power from this stone by touching it and then rubbing any body parts with the hand they touched the stone.
Soutou Hakuja Houju: The divine servant white snake is worshipped in front of Yakushi Ishi.
Fukuju Inari Shrine: This shrine enshrines the guardian deity of Saionji family, the former owner of Shirakumo Shrine.
Bonsai: Cute miniature potted plants are placed in front of the main sanctuary.
